We focus on 3 sight words each week. We put them on our word wall, cheer them, use them as secret passwords to get in the classroom and play games with them. We have boxes in our desks filled with sight word cards! When we have extra time, we review the cards and arrange them to make sentences. Remember to keep reviewing the words from previous weeks so they stay fresh in your child's mind! Many children have become "sight word detectives" and are finding the words hiding in other words, on posters, in books, in the hallways, etc.
We have learned the letter, keyword and sound for every letter of the alphabet. We have also practiced forming each letter properly. Lately we have been focusing on tapping out words to help us read and write. Show your child a 3 letter word and see if he/she can tap it out.
We have been working on some important reading skills and strategies! When we read big books together, we practice pointing to each word as we read. We also use picture clues and beginning letters to help us figure out tricky words! Through shared reading, read-alouds, guided reading and independent reading, we are becoming expert readers! Be sure to read with your child every night!
Every Monday, we do Weekend News. The children get a chance to write and draw about what they did over the weekend. It is a good idea to discuss some of the fun things they did before they go to school on Mondays so they will have good ideas and be ready to write! We have been focusing on making detailed pictures and getting down all of the sounds we hear in each word. We are also working on beginning each sentence with a capital letter and ending with the correct punctuation.
